I run some tests and I cannot reproduce the problem but I pointed you to the 
wrong function.
This works for me and does what you asked:

db = DAL()
db.define_table('a',Field('b'))
db.a.insert(b="xxx")
query = SQLFORM.build_query([db.a.b],'xxx')
print db(query).select()

Does it work for you?
