To me the ipython shell:

python web2py.py -S your_app_here -M
is incredibly cool and useful, while it's a pain to use the admin shell, 
with very poor history and copy-paste. I guess this shell would very easy 
to embed in your favorite GUI, if you use one.

I would place that one command line in very big letters in the manual, 
maybe even a tip in the admin interface shell (if you have ssh access, you 
can do better!).
