Dave,

I put an updated set of d3.js examples on my github page. Try 
the web2py-1.app.d3anim.w2p  which contains more examples, including 
"overlayed on a page".

You can change these examples by adding your own html files  by "extending" 
or "including" html files, and you can read more about this in the web2py 
manual.
