Jim, Sorry to bother you again but still can't get this working. I need to join my 2 tables by a date and not the DB ID key. Not sure if this can be done since it looks like Web2Py looks to join by DB ID only. In SQL this would be a simple join by date after building a date index on the date field in both tables.
