After some more investigation I found out that the latest trunk has the 
added options:
             buttons_placement = 
'right',                                           ):
             links_placement = 'right'                                     

With this option I can set links_placement ='left'  which results in the 
'links' column appearing on the first column.

Great, problem solved.
