This solution is pure CSS, or maybe you mean stickyfooter CSS property?? I agree with you that Sticky footer break easily and it a pain to fix. So this contribution may better go in a slice...
For the compatibility, I see no problem in my implementation with chrome, ff, forgot to look at IE, but it use to work in my older app layout (I refactor my app layout these days to make it works with bootstrap).
