Hi, I had the same problem a while ago. As you can see here, https://groups.google.com/d/topic/web2py/Uyjpd_GsMJk/discussion I solved the problem by commenting the second reference field (competition), running web2py and uncommenting the field (competition). I know that it isn't the best way at all by it worked.
