SVN is arguably one of the most widespread versioning tools in use, I think it would be a shame to discard it just because a few wrinkles (if you think svn is painful, that only means you have not used cvs :) ). However, I do think it could be perhaps better automated with a few scripts in order to be less error prone. Are you using svn just as a mirror to the launchpad bzr branch or is something happening based on the sources in svn ?
