Jon Troast is amidwestern musician, relatively young-ish (30?), releases CD's (you can get one free by registering on his website), does house concerts (we liked him enough around here, we are asking him to come for a fund-raising concert series). Well, you might like the music - but that misses the point.
We all talk about how easy WE have it, how much WE like one framework over another, etc. etc. Jon asks what many, many clients will ask: - make my site more user friendly (what does that mean in this case?); - make my site easy for ME (client) to add content to. So here you go - a challenge. Take a look at the existing site. Make plans; Discuss what your approach would be; (would you do frequent user feedback tests?!); Discuss how web2py would help (and what else it could do that would help more); Let the festivities begin! Happy Holidays! :-) Yarko B.t.w. - I enjoy Jon, and there are many such situations; a complex one is for Massimo's classrooms, PyCon2009, Unity Temple (or Restoration Foundation) web sites, .... and on, and on... I just thought THIS challenge would be fun to consider, and give a common ground for discussions & ideas. Have LOTS of FUN! Enjoy! ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: jon troast <j...@jontroast.com> Date: Thu, Dec 18, 2008 at 7:50 PM Subject: Email update (December 18) Thanks for reading the first line of this email. There's a lot more below... 1) The show at the Geneva Theater last Saturday went great! Sorry to those who couldn't be there, but the audience voted on your behalf, and here are the results: The top 5 songs for the evening were... #1 Sunshine of Love, #2 One of These Nights (not the Eagles' song), #3 Somewhere Down the Road, #4 Favorites, #5 Living Room Tour. I'll be recording demos of these 5 songs sometime in the next month or two and making them available for free download on my website! 2) Speaking of my website (www.jontroast.com), I've been thinking about having it redone. I want to make it a little more user friendly and easier for me to add new content. So, if you or someone you know is in the website designing business, please drop me a line. Any samples of previous work you've done would be helpful, as well as a price estimate (I understand that the price depends on how complex we get, but at least a ballpark figure would be helpful). 3) As a Christmas gift to all of you, I'm giving a guilt free conscience. Here's what I mean- I'm giving you permission to burn as many copies as you want of my cd Second Story and give them to your friends! I understand, the whole burning music issue is kind of complex (How will people hear the music if they can't pass it around? vs. How will artists make any money if everyone burns their cds?). Many of you may have already burned copies of it. All of that aside, I want to get the music out there. So, burn away! As many as you can. Please! Give them to your bus driver, paper boy, or waitress. Anyone. If you don't have a lot of money this year, but you can afford to buy some blank cds, go for it! Give them as gifts. Do you think a blank cd looks boring? Draw a picture on it. Give them some original art as well as some music. If they're not grateful, tell them to listen to Track #4. I just ask that somewhere on there you write my name and website (www.jontroast.com) so at least they know who they're listening to and can find and buy more if they want to. Obviously, the promotion will benefit me as well. So I guess we kind of have a gift exchange: promotion for me, guilt free conscience for you. I've come to the conclusion that a big part of being successful in the music business is getting your music out to as many people as possible, whether you're making money from it initially or not. So there you go. Merry Christmas! (please encourage the recipients to sign up for my email list and buy the cds as well. Even Santa needs milk and cookies!) 4) Congratulations to Kelly from Racine, WI! She won a cd in the last contest (it was in an email I sent just to local folks about the show last Saturday). The contest was about these exciting things called silent consonant digraphs. However, the contest in this email is about something even more exciting...raisins!! Here's how it works: You need to answer this question- Which raisins taste better, Dole or Sunmaid? We need a lot of votes on this one, because the winner will be the 20th person who votes for the winning raisin. Make sense? So for example, if there are 100 votes for Sunmaid and 150 votes for Dole (my personal favorite), the 20th person who voted for Dole would win a free cd. I know, it's a little complicated, but so are raisins. I mean, they're really just grapes right? But why are they called raisins and not dried grapes? Think about it...and then vote! 5) The final item in this email is just a heads up that I do have a Facebook page if you're interested in connecting on there. Someone was kind enough to remind me that I didn't include it in the links at the bottom of my emails. So, it's there now. Let's be friends! Merry Christmas and thanks for listening!
