Tom, someone has probably already answered this, but anyway... Nice Dress
Nellie, as she has been dubbed, was one of the more common extras (or
background actors) appearing in TAGS. We will probably never know her real
name for the same reason no one has been able to discover the identity of Mr.
Schwamp. Extras are not given screen credit, and I doubt that they did much,
if any, socializing with the main actors, so identifying them isn't easy. I
think many people make a career out of being an extra. Once in a while, an
extra will get a speaking part, but I think that is less common than extras who
simply work as extras all the time. As to Nellie, I have seen her on other
shows of that era, specifically in the original "Bob Newhart Show" of the early
seventies. I have noticed her as someone at Bob's office building, either on
the elevator or passing by wearing a white medical coat. Besides Mr. Schwamp,
another frequent extra on TAGS is Hazel Pierce. She was a rather tall, thi
n woman with a somewhat sharp-featured face, probably in her fifties.
Interestingly, Hazel was Lucille Ball's stand-in during the run of "I Love
Lucy" and can also be seen as an extra in many episodes of that show. Probably
the only reason why her real name is known is because of her being Lucy's
stand-in since I don't recall her ever having a speaking role. An example of
someone who served as a stand-in, extra, and speaking actor was Frank Adamo.
If you watch "The Dick Van Dyke Show," you will see him. He was Dick's
stand-in but also appeared in many episodes as either an extra or in a small
speaking role. He was tall and slender with dark hair like Dick. But, as I
said, it would seem that most extras were only that, so they never got screen
credit and are, thus, hard to identify. One of my friends, who is also a TAGS
fan, has been working part-time as a extra the past few years. I don't think
she aspires to anything more, but her work as a background actor has been a fun
 sideline for her.
