Susan makes a good point about all my choices for Valentine Couple are
single. I will try to explain my thinking when I came up with the list.
First of all, the vast majority of characters on TAGS are unmarried. Even
those who are were married were seldom seen with their spouses. I was
thinking of adding some married couples but then could not think of any
that I would consider Couples of the Year. As much as I like Otis, he
admitted on one episode that he gave his wife a lot of hard times. He took
great joy in hitting his wife's mother in the mouth with a leg of lamb, and
he once told Andy that a man should never apologize to a woman. He
admitted that his wife yammered yammered and yammered all the time and when
Barney was hard on him, he said it was as bad as being at home. Seeing he
spent most of his weekends in jail, I really did not think Otis and his
wife would be good choices. I also thought of the Boones, but there again
they were in constant combat with each other, even getting to the point of
throwing things at each other and calling each other some rather vile
names. By today's standards they could be charged with domestic violence.
I know Andy and Aunt Bee figured out it was there way of showing their
love, but then I think it was a mighty strange way of showing affection. I
also considered listing Rafe Hollister and his wife because of that
wonderful scene when he sang. But then again, Rafe was a moonshiner and he
was always moving around in the mountains which certainly was not a good
thing for his wife, and he probably was not the best provider for her. He
even shot at Andy and Barney one time and he too spend time in jail.

I know I probably appear a bit judgmental with these folks, but that was my
thinking. Using hindsight now, I think I should have listed the Scoby's as
they certainly were a very loving couple with a wonderful daughter, and
they stuck together and worked together through their hardships.

Also using hindsight, I wish I would have had Digest members "nominate"
couples and then I could have listed them and had people vote. That would
have been a much better way of doing it.

So thank you Susan, for your great insight. I always appreciate feedback
from my postings whether they be positive or negative. That is how one
learns. And believe me, I have a lot to learn.
