A friend found a birdcage at an estate sale and I recognized it as the same model (Crown) that was used for Opie's bird Dickie in "The New Housekeeper." I checked the door and it is on a spring that automatically closes the door, so Opie (or someone... like the Prop man) would have had to break the door to get it to stay open.
Next time you watch that episode, notice the close up shot of Dickie shows the cage door against the bedroom window, but in the master shot, the door opens into the room. Makes sense since they don't want to block the view of the bird with the door, but want to door to be more obvious for the plot.
