I grew up in rural SE Oklahoma, and we certainly had party lines! I realize that so far I'm not telling you anything that hasn't already been stated recently on the digest, except that I grew up in the 1980s and 90s. I graduated high school 20 years ago today, May 22, 1992 (the same night as Johnny Carson's final Tonight Show). I don't remember actually getting a private line; I just remember my uncle moving near us and our 4-party line dropping down to a 2-party line. When our neighbors (my uncle and his successors) eventually moved away, our party line just sort of faded into history. BTW, I always thought it was the neatest thing to get to call long-distance from my grandmother's phone in town, because I didn't even have to tell the operator what phone number I was dialing from.
My English teacher my senior year thrilled all of us students with his memory skills. He told us he could still remember his first girlfriend's phone number... "Two. That's it--two." _______________________________________________ WBMUTBB mailing list [email protected] http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
