I just watched "Return to Mayberry" today, and I got to thinking about the
tone of Denver Pyle's voice. On the 5 black & white episodes that the
Darling family appeared in, Denver as Briscoe had that deep voice, and of
course, talked slow and twangy. In the color episode "The Darling Fortune,"
he was different. He talked faster, and his voice was higher. In "Return to
Mayberry," his voice was higher and sounded more like his Uncle Jesse voice
from the Dukes of Hazzard (which I assume was Denver's natural speaking
voice). The question I have is this: Does anyone know if Denver Pyle had
something happen (such as tonsil removal) that caused him to be unable to
render that low original "Briscoe Darling" voice? I guess I could go back
and watch Bonnie and Clyde again to see what vocal style he uses.
