With this discussion of philomathian societies, I had to add that in the Betsy-Tacy Books by Maud Hart Lovelace, specifically Heaven To Betsy, the characters discuss the Philomathian and Zetamatian societies. These group, in the story were groups that were divided between the whole school. They "competed in athletics, in debate, and in essay writing"(Heaven to Betsy, Maud Hart Lovelace, p. 74).
