I was watching "The Rumor" from season four today as I was riding my stationary bike, and something struck me as rather peculiar, so I thought I'd run it by all of you. At the very beginning of the episode, Andy is seen walking down the street. He speaks to an unseen lady (forget her name) apparently across the street, and he calls out, "Mighty pretty black all-cloth coat!" I backtracked to make sure that was what he said, because it just seemed like an odd thing to call out to someone as you're walking down the street. I mean, it would sound natural to say, "Mighty pretty coat!" or even "Mighty pretty black coat!" But "Mighty pretty black ALL-CLOTH coat!" just sounds downright odd to me. I wonder why the writer had Andy saying that. It strikes me as rather cumbersome. Also, one doesn't usually expect a man to remark upon the type of fabric a woman is wearing. Usually anything Andy says has a natural and authentic ring to it. I guess that's why it stood out to me.
I know that's a pretty trivial triviality, but it's been preying on my mind. (And my mind is easy prey for anything involving TAGS!) Thelma Lou (Janet) _______________________________________________ WBMUTBB mailing list [email protected] http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
