That $64 Dollar of perfume, to me is the most extravagant thing of the whole show.
I have defended odd things on the show under the umbrella of "for the good of the story" on behalf of the writers. Sometimes you do have to exaggerate things to make the story have punch..so I definitely get that...but I think it would still have been a good story, even if he only paid $24 for the perfume. To put things in perspective $64 was more that the Scobies' monthly rent. It was more that the big $50 find of Opie's in the man's Purse..and I believe it is over the value of 200 jars of Miracle Salve.!! Who else in Mayberry could afford it?? What would Barney have said???? 64 Dollars!! Did you get a life-time supply? Did you sign up for a monthly payment plan? Should you save that for furniture after the wedding. Did a wedding ring come with that?? How about a fur coat???
