Hi Harry
I have to agree with you about Aunt Bee. She hasn't been one of my favorite
characters, but she's competing with Barney, Andy, Floyd, etc. and that's some
stiff competition.
Having said that, one of my favorite episodes is the Snake Oil Salesman and the
reason it's a favorite is because of Aunt Bee. I also liked her in Briscoe
Declares for Aunt Bee. There are many more episodes where she is on more of a
supporting player, but the episodes would not be the same without her. And
she's defended Opie a lot when Andy forgets what a "good little fella he is".
It seems that when the writers need a killjoy they would use the little old
ladies of Mayberry, the Mayor or Mr. Weaver. The old men were a bunch of
fun-loving, "smart-alecks" but the little old ladies seem to exist just to
spoil the fun. And they used Aunt Bee sometimes to be a kill-joy, which is
where I think my original attitude about Aunt Bee came from. I've come to
appreciate her more in the last few years.
The choir robes/foundation controversy....I haven't ever watched that one all
the way through. None of the color ones are in my favorite category.
