I'd like to take a moment to list some of the things that makes Madison, NC, just 45 miles from Mount Airy, as the most Mayberry-like town I've seen: 1. Mac-Pete and Skip. Mac-Pete was the caretaker of the tobacco warehouse. When it was lunchtime, Mac-Pete would tell Skip, his dog, "Go get my cheeseburger and fries, Skip" and put a paper bag with the money in Skip's mouth. Skip would go across the street (back in the gool old days, when people didn't run over animals for fun) to Bob's Restaurant. They took the money and loaded the goods in the bag, which Skip would carefully carry back to Mac-Pete. 2. Buying a car. I started to get prepared to sign reams of documents for buying an old Ford, when Leroy Snoddy said the one tiny document was enough. I asked about signing other stuff, and he answered, "What for? We know who you are." 3. Bob had a hangover one morning trying to open his restaurant, so my supervisor at the textile mill took over and ran the whole place-didn't even work there. 4. Finally, I spent a happy visit to a friend's house one day watching cartoons, sharing a couch with a 400 pound "Vietnamese Pot-Bellied Pig." Porky's favorite TV shows were cartoons, especially the ones where they called his name a lot!! _______________________________________________ WBMUTBB mailing list [email protected] http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
