During the 2002 Mayberry Days, we lunched at the little restaurant in the
Main Street Oak Emporium. This building was the former hardware store in Mt.
Airy. Betty Lynn and some of the other guests were just happening to be
lunching
there as well. Most of the other guests then started to depart one by one.
Betty Lynn was the last one at the table. She was sitting there by herself
smoking as she gazed into space and looked around the room. "What was she
thinking?" Was it how a 1960s sitcom grew to accumulate such a huge fan base?
Was
she mesmerized by the scope of 'The Andy Griffith Show?' Her slow drags on
that cigarette reminded me of Greta Garbo.
She finally got up and walked out table. She placed her hand on my son's
shoulder and smiled at him and me as she made her way out of the room. What a
lady!

P.S. (It also reminded me that she should really quit smoking! Andy took
drags on TAGS, but he's since quit).
