Mike, With respect to the design, have you seen: http://www.waveprotocol.org/protocol/web-client-ui-mocks which was (in 2010) an outline of a new design for GWave that was never implemented.
We would be interested in working with you to refresh the design of WIAB (within restrictions). Many of us on the list can do the coding. If you would like to present a few designs, we can give you an idea of the effort required to implement it. Ali.
