You can also try

Range range = TitleHelper.findImplicitTitle(rootDoc);
return DocHelper.getText(rootDoc, range.getStart(), range.getEnd());

Normally there won't be a title unless something is calling
TitleHelper.maybeFindAndSetImplicitTitle on the document?
