This letter appeared in the Burlington Free Press on Monday, February 28. I
have restored the original paragraphing. (They stuck several of mine together,
to save lines I guess.)
Truce Questions

American media will frame the truce between Palestinians and Israelis
in terms supplied by the Israeli government: âWill the Palestinians stop the
violence?â But this question turns reality on its head.

There are no checkpoints in Israel where Palestinians require Israelis
to undergo body searches. No Palestinian tanks roam Israeli streets. Israelis
are
not driven off their land so a wall can be built. Palestinian snipers do not
watch over Israeli neighborhoods, ready to kill any Israeli child who gets too
close to the wall.

Of course, Palestinians do attack Israelis, both civilians and soldiers
occupying Palestinian areas. Letâs consider the relative impact on both
societies.

Palestinian casualties far outnumber those of Israel: at least three
times as many dead from violence, and tens of times as many wounded. There is
a vast difference in the ways the conflict affects people on both sides
disproportionately in terms of damage to property, peopleâs health, their
livelihoods, and their chances for a productive and comfortable life.

The real questions are, âWill Israel proportionally scale down its
far greater amount of violence?â and, âWill Israel stop building its
Apartheid Wall?â If
these things happen, then there is a chance for peace.
