I think so? Neale and/or others will be able to confirm/deny that. linux-cp
utilises tap and tun interfaces, so it may be more of an extension rather
than alternative?

The intention of disabling the ping plugin is so that the linux IP stack
responds to ICMP echo requests, not VPP.
