My mistake, I thought the ip link command was being using to enable allmulticast for the VF on the host (not the PF).
I don't know the gory details of SRIOV, but it sounds like from what you are saying that the multicast filtering (perhaps promiscuous mode too?) is not actually isolated per VF and so allowing a VF to set this value would impact other VFs? I googled a bit and found that there's a "trust on" option for VFs that perhaps is related to allowing the setting of this value by a VF? This is disappointing. I would have hoped that the separate VF queues etc would have allowed the VFs to be truly independent (and not impact each other).
