Joel, Why not try http://webchat.freenode.net or https://webchat.freenode.net? It looks like anything is possible with www.irccloud.com, including the one you mention: perhaps they want you to subscribe to a premium version.
Also, there are a number of clients listed here https://freenode.net/kb/answer/sasl and most are free; some are geared to Mac, I think. And pidgin is fine once you do the extra work I mentioned earlier.
