Given the VPP plugin extensible framework it looks very plausible to add media processing plugin into VPP itself. That is, instead of processing media in VMs move it into VPP layer. The media control plane can stay as VM and can interact with SDN controller via remote programmability option. I'd say very feasible. Depending on the media type, and if its AVoIP or not. If AVoIP then vnet is a good fit. If its streamed like H.264 frames, these can be vector processed, especially for RTP encap. Seems like a good thing to do. Is this inline with the intent of VPPs or is fundamentally flawed? Is there any reference work done in this space? I'm not aware of any prior art.
