It was the simplest of technologies to implement. The technology was nevertheless extremely effective. In daytimes when aircraft was approaching their targets in preparation of another bombing run they would turn ON their headlights. Implementing this simple action caused the aircraft's dark silhouette to effectively blend in with the bright blue sky from many miles away - as perceived by the retinas of sentinel guards who were on the lookout for approaching enemy aircraft. This simple technique bought our aircraft several additional minutes of invisibility as we approached targets. I would imagine the "element of surprise" became less effective as radar became more pervasive. I believe there are also interesting stories of decoys that were constructed and strategically placed here and there during WW II - primarily to fool enemy observers into mistaking the strength of their opponents.
