Which is an interesting way to not-ground an antigravity experiment ;-)
IOW - why ground (earth) when instead you can, in certain situations,
engineer a net benefit to an odd-ball experiment? Using thick foil and
thin teflon, this electrophorus plate can be made to be a very
lightweight substrate.
Johannes Wilcke invented, and Alessandro Volta perfected the
"electrophorus" over two hundred years ago. Nothing new under the sun
even then however (as some suspect that a certain Biblical Ark, covered
in gold foil, operated as an electrophorus).
This device was quickly adopted by experimenters of Volta's day, along
with the similar idea of the Leyden jar because they filled the need for
a source of charge and voltage for electrostatics. Many old natural
philosophy texts contain lithographs of the electrophorus.

Nowadays the electrophorus may have a usage outside of electrostatics....
...perhaps even in anti-gravity (when used as a substrate for a certain
NR experiment) ? Time will tell.
