I find the all-electric + (ideally biodiesel powered) genset trailer combination much better than
hybrid, because the ICE bit must only provide _average_ power (~1/3 of peak power) so it's only a
small engine, which moreover you only carry along when you need it, i.e. only occasionally, and only
until battery filling/swapping stations will be widespread which could be fairly soon:

Yes. This makes the most sense of all.
The average citizen would not even need own a genset trailer, and every
plug-in would come with an easily connected hitch; so that when trips
were planned, one would reserve a genset at the new 'filling station'
and rent it. It will also have extra storage space and perhaps even be
self powered, as the plug-in cannot tow much weight.
The merger and downgrading of Exxon into Hertz ? That is a comeuppance.
