I think the most interesting thing about limelight is how almost all the emitted radiation seems to be in the visible spectrum. Carbon arc, for example, has lots of UV and IR for the same amount of energy input. Don't know the explanation for that. Those thorium gas mantles seem to have the same property, but work at a much lower temperature.
