Richard, Since you are going to have a hollow shaft, it makes since to make the I.D. of the shaft of a particular size, if possible. That rationale is so that you can also try using microwaves at the resoant frequency of the water molecule, which is 22 Ghz. If you make the ID a quarter wavelength to this - less than a cm. then you have all the bases covered.
