You mention kde, That shows me the next configuration:
Linux vnc server: have a look at
http://www.sourcecodecorner.com/articles/vnc/linux.asp for an alternate
setup.
~/.vnc directory or vncserver script is already altered to use kde.

Solution: get back to the origional config that uses twm. Get that working,
then update to kdm step by step. To get back: rename the .vnc directory and
restart the vncserver.

This indicates it's not a vnc problem.

Have a look at this setup:
http://www.sourcecodecorner.com/articles/vnc/linux.asp. Specially the kde
and Xautority part are of interest in your problem. The entire setup is my
advice...
