Just wanted to let people know how I will solve the problem.
The suggestion by Alan Hourihane to use Xvnc from
http://xf4vnc.sourceforge.net was a good one, but I cannot assume I
have root access on every machine, so this doesn't work for me. My
solution follows along the lines suggested by Jonathan Morton, which
is just to build Mesa independently and add the .so's from Mesa to my
LD_LIBRARY_PATH, so the GL calls are intercepted by Mesa and all is
well. Note that I don't get hardware acceleration this way, because
the "Real X Server" on the machine is using the video card, but it
will do for my purposes (software testing).
Thanks for the help!
