You may be confusing -depth and -bgr233: -depth tells the viewer to create its local window at that depth. The pixel size used to talk to the VNC server is not affected (and will probably be 32 bits). If the local system doesn't support that depth, the option is ignored (as you noticed). On Linux systems, the X servers only support one depth anyway, so the -depth option isn't useful. (My work Sun Solaris system, on the other hand, supports both 8 and 24, so here that option *is* of some use). There is no option in the Windows viewer that corresponds to this one. -bgr233 tells the viewer to use 8 bits to talk to the VNC server. The viewer creates its window at using the default for the system it is running on.
This corresponds to the Windows 'Restrict pixels to 8 bit' option. I suspect you really want -bgr233 instead of -depth 8.
