If you go out and buy a study guide for the CompTIA network + qualification,
it will give you a good grounding in networking, and it goes from basic too.

NAT (Name Address Translation) is the process of converting between the IP
addresses used on a private network (such as a home LAN) and Internet IP
addresses. This makes it possible to use a large number of addresses within
the private network while using a few Internet IP addresses. In your
situation this means that instead of using ICS, you could use an IP Proxy
which basically routes everything from the internal network to the Internet.
It's a very similar role to what ICS is doing now.

You would have the proxy software on the server, that isn't your machine,
and both machines would then have an internal IP address (for sake of
argument, 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2). You would connect your machine
(192.168.1.2) to the proxy on 192.161.1.1 (which would be the server). You
can then connect to the Internet as before, with no loss of performance.

You would then need to redirect port 5900 on the server to the port 5900 of
your machine, and then you can connect to the internet IP address, which
would be redirected to your machine and you could then access your machine
from the internet by VNC.
