The original question was, I think, about transfering files *from* a
Windows machine.  It's nice to know that certain protocols are good, but
it would be even better if someone knew where we can get a good program to
install on Windows that will allow it to serve files securely.

pcAnywhere includes file transfer capability, but it costs money (more
than it should, perhaps), and people on this list are using VNC and don't
need pcAnywhere's remote control capability.

Some ftp servers for Windows have been mentioned, but ftp is an insecure
protocol where the password is transmitted as plain text on the network.
I don't want to use it because of that.

Can anyone name a specific Windows *program* (free or proprietary) that
can solve our file-transfer problem?
