My /etc/X11/Xmodmap file has "keycode 22 = Backspace".  I don't remember for
sure if I added that to fix VNC, but you might try it.  (You should be able
to try it with xmodmap at the command line, to find out.)  This really
confused me at first because my password had a "5" in it. ;)

The search engine at At&t is having a bad night it appears. Any one knwo the
URl for the info on fixing a termcap or keystroke problem. Using Vns between
linux boxes. Every thing else works fine. Both the keypad and top row number
key 5's do this. I remeber seening a fix for this a whle back but can't seem
to find it.
