My /etc/X11/Xmodmap file has "keycode 22 = Backspace". I don't remember for sure if I added that to fix VNC, but you might try it. (You should be able to try it with xmodmap at the command line, to find out.) This really confused me at first because my password had a "5" in it. ;)
