I actually purchased (paid real money) for a version of TridiaVNC. I have run a few tests with it over my home DSL line, but it is difficult to see if there is any speed improvement at all. It seems like the one thing that improves performance the most is restricting pixel values to 8bit on the client side. Although the downside is that it offsets the colors somewhat.
