Scanman's suggestion to look at the icon in the system tray would work, but 
only if you are present when the connection occurs.

If you need to monitor whether someone connected while you were away, you 
might consider using your firewall and turning on logging. Your logging 
options are more limited with Win9x or Me vs WinNT or Win2000, so using 
something like ZoneAlarm or ZoneAlarm Pro and having it monitor successful 
connections to ports 5800 and/or 5900 might tell you what you need.

Perhaps if we had more info about your environment: business, home, type of 
network, WAN vs LAN, firewall, etc...
