Running a vncviewer inside an X terminal session on J.Random Host is a very poor performer (eg, an NCD, but the query applies to tektronix, or anything else). The vncviewer works well when the X server is local, but when it isn't, the fact that all the graphic ops go over the net without optimization between the login host and the terminal (among other problems) slows things waaaaaaay down.
But of course... there's no reason the vncviewer process couldn't run as a native app on the X terminal itself, like the setup menus, or the native window manager, and the login monitor and so forth. Should be plenty fast. Does anybody know if a vncviewer has been ported to run as an X app embedded in an X terminal, especially NCD? Or, as an alternative a complete image to make it a VNC-terminal instead of an X-terminal; ie, VNC as the *only* thing running? Seems like a simple thing to do, and allows the notion of "X terminal" to expand its market nich slightly, so maybe it has been done?
