I have the same Nividia setup on with both machines (@1280x1024) with no
problem with TightVNC, I am no expert but I would tend to suspect that the
remote graphics setup is more likely the culprit (assuming poor picture
quality), though you did not say what that is.

I have re-read your post and I am beginning to wonder if what you are
expecting to do is somehow have a max res of 1024x768 rendered at something
higher.  I guess you could use the scale option, but my experience has only
ever been to reduce, not to magnify.
