Thanks for the info. I will try reducing the resolution and colour. 

I have a cable modem connection between the 2 machines. The connection is over a VPN 
and NAT. Maybe something there. Anyway to trace or debug this via VNC logs/tools?

In the meantime, I will also try tightVNC. Thanks for your help,
