James, Well I am no expert but here is what you need to do.
1) Go to the home directory of the user you have vncserver running under. 2) Switch to the directory .vnc and open the file xstartup. 3) Comment out the line "twm &" 4) Add the line "sh /usr/bin/startkde &", without the quotes of course. The problem you where running is to is that KDE could not run its windows manager since twm was already running. The steps above should fix this. If you look at the archives for this list you will find many other ways to launch kde (or gnome) in this manner that are possibly much more efficient then the one above. I'm running VNC on Redhat 7.0 and I would like to be able to run an X desktop, such as KDE or GNOME. I'm not even sure how to start gnome, but when I try to start kde by typing 'startkde &' in the xterm window it responds that 'a window manager is already running". It then proceeds to load the KDE background and desktop icons (trash, templates, autostart), but never loads the menus, etc. I'm not running X on the machine locally. It just boots to the text console. I start two VNC sessions as root automatically, both loading an xterm window. My questions are: How do I start a window manager where I get the complete desktop, with menus and everything? How do I start gnome? (I thought once I started kde I could use the switching tool to switch between them, not sure if that will work....)
