I've experienced the same behaviour using pcAnywhere as well, in some
circumstances (the video acceleration thing, I believe - it was a while
ago). So, it's not like it's just a VNC thing.

Actually, the same happens to MediaPlayer.



In fact, any data, including videos and images, which is post-processed by
your graphics-card won't be caught by VNC.



This happens because the pixel information in these cases is not joined
together with the rest of your screen data. They are blended on the fly with
the rest of your screen data just before being sent to your screen-device.
This technique of displaying data is called 'Overlay Surface'.



You could try overriding this by turning off all the Video Acceleration in
your Window's Display Settings, but I'm not sure if this is going to work at
all.
