Funny that this should come up... I just installed VNC on a machine with X-Windows... and I typed password, and this gray screen came up. I thought.. damn... something is incompatible.... Well.. close.. but no cigar. I left clicked on the background, holding the mouse button down... some little invisible windows popped up. All you have to do.. is Click-Hold and drag a little to the right .. it should pop up with something... may not look exactly like your desktop, but it is. Hope that's all!
