On Linux (or any other UNIX) you should work with a Virtual (that's the
V in VNC) X terminal and access it from your real X or a PC from the
same machine or any other machine.

One thing to remember: VNC is not secure, use SSH (or any kind of VPN)
to access the Linux across public network.

I work this way and I'm very pleased.
