Hello,

I am trying to use VNC to run unix sessions from my pc, using SSH to start
my unix xsession. This is the only way I can get into my college's server
due to security issues. When I start vncserver on the unix side, I get
error messages similar to those in question 13 of the FAQ, but according to
my sysadmin, the permissions are set to let everybody access the file
mentioned in the FAQ.

Here is question 13 in the FAQ:

Q13 I get errors like "failed to bind listener" and "Failed to establish
all listening sockets" in the log file.
This is probably due to the permissions on /tmp/.X11-unix. You may well see
this if you update to Solaris 2.7 or Redhat 6.0, for example. See the
section below entitled "Why can I only run vncserver/Xvnc as root?".

Here are the messages I got when I tried to start the unix server:

hagues ~ % vncserver
_XSERVTransSocketCreateListener: failed to bind listener
_XSERVTransSocketUNIXCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: failed to create listener for local

Fatal server error:
Failed to establish all listening sockets

New 'X' desktop is hagues:2

Starting applications specified in /h/buzzy/.vnc/xstartup
Log file is /h/buzzy/.vnc/hagues:2.log

I looked at the contributed page where connecting using SSH through a
"middleman" computer is discussed
(http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/sshwin.html), but this doesn't apply
directly to my situation because there is no need to have this middle
computer in my situation (all unix boxes in the lab have vnc loaded on them).

Can you think of any other reasons why I'm having problems with this setup?

Thanks,

Jon Belak
