I had this problem before.  you must run the server with a color depth of 16 
bpp or greater, for some reason kde 2 does not like low color displays.  kde 
1 was happy with a 4 bpp display.  

I have no idea why this is like this, if some one can explain it to the list 
i would appreciate it.
