I'm using ICQ to do that.

I have ICQ clients on the system where I work and I use GnomeICU on my linux
system at home. I just open up user details and copy out the IP number 
from there.
I found I had to make sure that the ICQ clients at work didn't go into 
"away mode"
or the IP wouldn't show up.
